Party #11 How Does the Forest Do It!
July 11 @ 8:00 AM - 4:00 PM$65
Hike through San Gorgonio Wilderness
Hosts: Kathy Behrens, Libby Groom
In June 2015, more than 31,000 acres of forest burned in the San
Gorgonio Wilderness in the mountains above Redlands. The forest
is recovering – aspen grove is coming back, new pines are sprouting,
wildflowers cover the newly-opened landscape. Despite the
destruction, it’s gorgeous again. This party is a full-on adventure,
not for the weak of heart. Seriously. Guests will need to be able to
hike 7 or 8 miles at 7,000 to 8,000 foot elevation. CalFire retiree
and Redlands Conservancy Outdoor Ambassador Libby Groom will
guide hikers and give guests an insider’s look at how the fire was
fought, why some trees burned and others did not, and how fire
itself is a natural part of a cycle of renewal and regeneration.
Snacks and a picnic lunch will be waiting for hikers when they
return to the trailhead. If you’re one of the hardy ones, get ready
to experience the wilderness as you never have.
